Friends of Project Tariro (Friends) convened on Saturday, May 17 at the
General Board of Higher Education and Ministry in Nashville, Tennessee to
elect a board of directors and discuss plans for building awareness and
support of Project Tariro. Project Tariro's mission is to address the needs
of Persons Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) in Manicaland, Zimbabwe through
a holistic program of rehabilitation, medical treatment, nutrition,
education, support and training. The endeavor began in 2007 with The United Methodist
Church Deacon Initiative, and is a cooperative effort of The
United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, the Faculty of Health Sciences, Africa University
and Friends of Project Tariro. The situation in Zimbabwe has recenty improved
enough for this partnership to move forward in hiring staff and program development.
The current financial goal of Friends is to raise $200,000 within
two years
to begin plans for a residential care facility and a mini-bus to
bring PLWHA
to the center; education in nutritional gardening and micro-entrepreneurial
skills; spiritual guidance and support; as well as training for
Africa
University students. Thanks to the generosity of deacons and other
supporters, over 25% of the goal has been realized. With Zimbabwe's
political crisis, cholera outbreak and growing level of poverty,
the need
for help is great. Contributions should be addressed to Africa
University
Development Office (noting Friends of Project Tariro), Box 340007,
Nashville, TN 37203.
